My Educational Philosophy (Japanese and English)

For my last class, I wrote an educational philosophy paper. I decided to sum it up in my target language (Japanese) as a challenge to myself. I also thought this would be a good time to try out the embed feature from Tumblr as well.

HTML Woes

Long ago, I used to own a Blogger just like I used to own a Xanga. I picked it up again for an assignment that "required" the use of Blogger, but I found out later that it could've been any blogging platform really. If I had known that earlier, I would've chosen something less frustrating, like Wordpress or Tumblr.

Thinking about Wordpress, I believe it's a very quiet platform. Not that nothing exciting is going on, but it comes to me as a serene place to retreat. It has the feeling of snuggling in a cozy corner with a blanket and cup of cocoa. So, I think of Wordpress as a writing corner. Tumblr is a lively site, in that it feels like a party is going on every minute of the day. I love it because of that and the seemingly limitless amount of themes. I have about six Tumblrs already and two that I use regularly, but for some reason I can't picture myself doing anything school related on that site. As I said, it's like a party, so there's always some distracting thing to look at on there, like Holland lops, architecture, food, design, clothing...

Now, Blogger, in itself, is a very simple platform to use, but it's design hasn't changed much since when I first started using it. They are so lackluster and tiring; I can't stand it. So being the semi-educated-on-HTML person I am, I decided to opt for a third-party theme.

I love it. It stands out. It was an absolute pain to deal with.

It was all because one thing called <meta content="xxxxx" which would leave x's in my description should anyone choose to share my posts. There were about eight of these tags, each of them pointing to different things such as Google verification, Bing verification, etc. I had to scour the Internet looking for posts that people answered in the most unclear manner. I had to get meta tags from Bing, Google, and Facebook; the Facebook admin ID was a pain to find because of outdated information.

In the end, I called on the Lord, and He brought me to a simple site, specifically built for fetching a Facebook admin ID. If only I had asked Him earlier...

Having filled a good portion of the meta contents, I then attempted to share a post. When I did, I found the "xxxxx" was still there for og:description. I was so frustrated, and I spent more time looking up what this meant, and that's when I realized it: All I needed was a description. A written description. No codes, no admin IDs, no site verification. Really, from the beginning, I just needed a description.

Welcome to my Blog!

I started this blog as a way to share my ideas and thoughts with other like-minded educators. I have always enjoyed used technology and recently, I’ve come into a wealth of new tools that can be used in a variety of different ways. Using technology to enhance education is very challenging and requires a good amount of creativity. Also, the increase in the amount of people, specifically children and teens, using technology has posed concern about how this can be accomplished.

I want this blog to be a resource for individuals to gain insight on teaching effectively with technology and promoting digital citizenship, specifically in blended learning and homeschooling formats. I choose these two formats because they are the ones I will be working with on a daily basis. Even so, any educator, parent, or individual may find this information to be useful and applicable to their own lives.

Although I have no experience in teaching in public schools, I’m a Bible study teacher at a small church where I work with children ages five to teens. Working at a small church has allowed me some flexibility in the curriculum, and I have slowly been integrating technology into my Bible study lessons. In the coming months, I will be working as a facilitator for a Christian virtual blended learning academy. The academy is set up as an independent blended learning model, with emphasis on Gardner’s multiple intelligences.

My goal with this site is to bring a fresh experience to the educational platform and encourage innovation and creativity.
